I wasn’t sure what to expect when I received the invitation. It’s a busy season, so I tend to scrutinize the events that go on my calendar more than normal during the month of December.
But then again the founder of Verity Vareé is my daughter, and her dream business was turning one. It was going to be a birthday celebration!
Celebrate. The word comes from the Latin verb celebrare meaning honor or glorify publicly (thinkcelebrity; a person who is glorified). When we want to publicly honor a day or person, it calls for a celebration!
Verity Vareé's tagline is “Revealing the truth about beauty through your story.” If there’s any aspect of a person our culture loves to celebrate, it is beauty! And if a woman is lucky enough to be born with the current “brand” of beauty, she wins. If not, well she's relegated to a life of denying her beauty or striving to conform to someone else’s idea of beautiful.
Verity Vareé was founded upon the idea that every woman is worth being celebrated. They don't attempt to affirm women by denying beauty. Rather, they reveal a woman's beauty. Because a woman's unique beauty is worth being celebrated, too!
"How do they reveal a woman’s beauty?" I’m so glad you asked!
Through the process of a natural and stylized photo shoot along with a personal interview (all together referred to as a "Reveal"), Verity Vareé begins by revealing beauty to the woman herself. The camera, her unique style, and insightful questions combine to reveal what often has been hidden by culture’s lies regarding beauty. Then her Reveal is revealed on the Verity Vareé website and through a personal “lookbook” featuring her photos.
And her unique beauty is celebrated . . . honored publicly!
I know all this from experience. Emily asked me to go through the Vv Reveal. As a middle-aged grandma, I wasn’t too sure. I can still remember “Glamour” photos from the 90's and wasn’t sure how I would be perceived (yes, I care). My concerns were in vain.
My Reveal was one of the most affirming experiences I’ve ever known.
My natural shot celebrated me. Unadorned, no makeup, hair not far from what I look like fresh out of bed. I was in the woods, my happy place, and doing what I love, meditating and pondering creation.
The stylized shoot was conceived to reflect what I love and celebrate . . . books, music, creation, beauty. The setting and feel were a reflection of my heart. It was surreal.
And the interview. Emily conducts the interviews, but she makes it feel more like talking with a very caring friend. Her interpersonal skill and insight go full-on display as she channels her love of women and beauty into penetrating yet gracious and affirming questions. As I pondered my answers, my own heart was revealed to me.
The Reveal celebrated me!
Celebration doesn't happen without intention. It takes forethought, time, planning, and effort.
